7 qualities to select the perfect personal trainer
People learn most effectively from other people, so choosing the right personal trainer to guide you down your fitness journey is a critical decision. A personal trainer is more than a voice to push you through an intense sweat session. Our job is to not only to get you the results you want, but also teach you along the way.
We created a list of qualities that we at Rebar Fitness firmly believe should be checked off before making the crucial choice in selecting the right personal trainer.
Quality # 1 – Walks the Talk
Work with a personal trainer that not only looks “fit” but also moves well. When they demonstrate an exercise do they move with ease and efficiency or are they stiff and rigid? Pay attention to how smoothly they move and carry themselves, even when not exercising. This is a huge indicator of how experienced the personal trainers are in their own practice and if they can help you stay injury-free in your pursuit of fitness.
Quality # 2 – Good Listener
It’s essential to work with a personal trainer who is a good listener and really hears you. If they seem to devalue your goals or talk over your concerns then you may want to find a professional who isn’t obsessed with the sound of their own voice and is willing to hear what’s most important to you.
Quality # 3 – Truth Seeker
A good personal trainer never stops learning, even after formal education ends. In order to be truly effective, a personal trainer must wear many hats-from physiologist to change psychologist. Ask the personal trainer you are looking to hire about their continuing education and make sure it extends beyond YouTube University or Bodybuilding.com.
Quality # 4 – Strong Networker
Although personal trainers are at the front line of your health, one person can’t have all the answers. An ethical and professional personal trainer will refer you to a medical professional when questions arise beyond their scope of practice or knowledge. Reclaiming your health and fitness can be quite a bumpy path; you’re more likely to succeed if you work with a team of professionals versus a single person.
Quality # 5 – Proven Track Record
If you have a specific goal in mind-for example, dropping body fat, getting stronger, etc-ask your perspective trainer for documentation of their successes. An exceptional personal trainer will always have tools to record progress and demonstrate tangible evidence of progress.
Quality # 6 – Honest
Transformation is a beautiful process… not a magical quick fix. If someone is promising you something that sounds too good to be true, it’s too good to be true. An exceptional personal trainer knows how to mentor their students through the process; how to best employ a delicate balance of honesty and compassion. No gimmicky marketing or false promises necessary. If your trainer isn’t honest, it doesn’t matter how pretty their smile is…run!
Quality # 7 – Grounded
It’s important to work with someone you feel comfortable conversing and confiding in. With that said, your trainer shouldn’t spend your valuable time venting about his or her own personal issues. Most often, stress relief is the very reason you need exercise, so the last thing you need is more of it. Choose a personal trainer who leads a balanced life and conducts himself or herself with professionalism.
